CSCS Card Colours
Green: Labourer
The Green CSCS Card is the starting point for entry-level workers in the construction industry. To qualify for this card, you must have completed either the RQF Level 1/SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a construction environment or the SCQF Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate. Additionally, you must pass the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test. This card is valid for five years and is renewable. This is the simplest card to acquire and requires the least CSCS card qualifications. If you’re on site this is often the minimum qualification required.
Red: Apprentice, Management, Technical or Experienced Trainee or Provisional Card
Red cards have the same basic requirements as green cards but usually mean the holder is undergoing some form of training or that the card is only temporary. Red cards are also non-renewable but have long expiry dates. Red cards can mean a wide range of CSCS card qualifications, unlike the other types of card in this list. Of all the CSCS card types, red cards have the most diverse seniority on site as some holders may be apprentices, whilst others might be seasoned builders or managers in training.
Apprenticeship
Red Apprentice CSCS Cards are designed for individuals who are officially registered in an apprenticeship program. Proof of apprenticeship is required to hold this card. Unlike some other cards, this one has a fixed validity period of 4.6 years and is not renewable.
Experienced Technical, Supervisor, or Manager
For individuals who have on-the-job experience as a manager or supervisor but are not affiliated with a professional body or who have a minimum of one year of work experience in a construction-related occupation. It’s a temporary card issued while you work toward obtaining a relevant NVQ qualification. This card is valid for three years and is not renewable.
Trainee
The Red Trainee CSCS Card is for individuals just starting their journey in the construction industry as trainees. To be eligible, you should have enrolled in a relevant training course and passed the essential CITB health and safety knowledge test. It is valid for 5 years and cannot be renewed.
Provisional
Only available to those who have not held a CSCS card before. This card is usually given to people working through a probation period or undergoing work experience on-site. Card owners do not have to be subscribed to a construction-related qualification. These provisional cards last for 6 months and are non-renewable.
Blue: Skilled Worker
The Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card is available to individuals who possess an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in a construction-related subject or have successfully completed an approved apprenticeship program. This card lasts for five years and can be renewed upon expiry.
Gold: Advanced Craft or Supervisor
The Gold Advanced Craft CSCS Card is granted to those with a Level 3 NVQ/SVQ qualification or individuals who are highly skilled in their field within the construction industry. It’s also awarded to those who have completed an approved indentured apprenticeship or employer-sponsored apprenticeship with specific qualifications. This card is renewable after five years.
Supervisory
The Gold Supervisory CSCS Card is available to supervisors and technical professionals upon achieving a Construction Related Supervisory/Technical NVQ or SVQ Level 3 or 4. It has a validity period of five years and can be renewed upon expiration.
Black: Manager
The Black Manager CSCS Card is one of the highest-level cards for individuals in management roles and technical occupations within the construction industry. To qualify, you must hold NVQ/SVQ Level 4, 5, 6, or 7 qualifications in Construction Management/Technical fields. This card is valid for five years and can be renewed.
White: Academically/Professionally Qualified Person
Academically Qualified Person (AQP)
The White Academically Qualified Person (AQP) CSCS Card is for individuals who have completed certain construction-related degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates, and NEBOSH diplomas. It requires the highest level of education. It’s renewable every five years, and CSCS provides a list of accepted qualifications on its website.
Professionally Qualified Person (PQP)
The White Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) CSCS Card is for members of CSCS-approved professional bodies whose professions require them to visit construction sites. You must provide evidence of your knowledge of health and safety standards on construction sites. This card can be renewed every five years.
