Social Sustainability: Careers Advice, Interviews & Work Experience with Local Schools
As part of our continuing social values policy we have been busy giving back to local communities by helping the education sector
Recently, we’ve taken part in three initiatives each helping students with career guidance and advice. We’ve been hosting, advising and guiding the next generation through our social sustainability outreach program. To see more from our socially responsible programs, we have a large blog full of our activities here! We believe that community engagement can only help enrich our industry as well as support the construction trade. It’s this form of sustainable recruitment that we feel separates us from our competition
Community Engagement
Our Managing Director, Scott Bulloch went back to school on the 14th of July 2023, providing career help and guidance to Years 10, 11 and 12 students at South Nottingham Academy. Scott conducted interview workshops as part of careers week, where he met some excellent young motivated students. Commenting on the event, Scott said “It was great to see so many regional employers attending and supporting local schools.”

Work Experience Placements
We have also hosted two students from the South Nottingham Academy for a weeks’ work experience placement. As the students were interested in pursuing careers in business management we showed them the inner workings of our business.
Charlie Bottomore and Jacob Geeson shadowed our Recruitment Resourcers as they filled temporary roles for our clients, watched as we processed payroll, and helped us with our marketing activities, amongst many other hands-on projects that we set for them. Instead of just getting them to make the tea, they participated in all business functions and were guided through each of the mechanisms of the business.
One such project was to consider why people should choose to work in construction, and the advantages construction offers as a career, and then to discuss why school leavers should consider a career in construction. The students pooled their ideas and created a LinkedIn graphic with our marketing department which can be found here and is copied below
This project was devised after we recently attended the Construction Leadership Council’s Skills Plan Webinar which focused on tackling worker shortages within the construction industry. In particular, the Council discussed how it had set up a voluntary task force to increase the pathways leading to a career in construction and to improve the links between the educational sector and construction employers with a view to encouraging students to enter the construction industry. Both Charlie and Jacob enjoyed their time here at Net Temps for their work experience and both have said they found their work experience worthwhile.
Delivering career presentations
Our Managing Director, Scott Bulloch was out and about again, this time visiting the Colonel Frank Seely Academy to deliver a presentation to Year 10 students focusing on defining the X factor in employability and achievements in life. Scott also spoke about his own career in recruitment which has spanned 27 years to date, with a view to inspiring approximately 125 students to think about the varied opportunities that are open to them. Whether they’re interested in construction or other industries, we were pleased to have helped young minds through sustainable recruitment.

We’ve loved assisting and advising the schools and their career advisory teams, and we would thoroughly recommend other businesses get involved with similar initiatives as we found the process rewarding overall. We believe in working sustainably, not just regarding the environment, but in giving back to our local communities. We believe strongly in sustainable recruitment and feel that these practices should be standard within the industry.
