There are currently great opportunities available for Quantity Surveyors looking for their next new permanent role with many of our clients seeking an addition to their team. With a surge in new instructions, and Quantity Surveyors across all disciplines (civils and groundworks, fit out, retail, healthcare, new build and commercial) in short supply, it’s currently a candidate driven market.
Shortage of Quantity Surveyors
The UK construction industry is currently grappling with a significant shortage of Quantity Surveyors. A report published last year, estimates that there were approximately 64,200 Quantity Surveyors working in the UK in the last quarter of 2023, compared with 65,500 in the previous quarter.
The shortage was reported widely 2 years ago *, when it was noted that there were a decreasing number of new graduates entering the market, combined with an aging workforce reaching retirement age. It was also noted that there was a skills gap between traditional quantity surveying methods and the latest industry practices.
Pivotal Role held by Quantity Surveyors
The role of Quantity Surveyor is critical for the successful execution of construction projects – responsible for cost estimation, budget management, procurement, and financial monitoring throughout the project lifecycle. Their expertise ensures that projects are completed within budgetary constraints while maintaining quality standards and adhering to regulatory requirements.
Therefore, the daily challenges currently faced by Quantity Surveyors should not be underestimated, being often (and non-exhaustively) cited as:
The requirement to follow economic trends and develop flexible cost plans that are constantly reviewed to ensure budgets are met, whilst remaining in contact with suppliers to achieve the best deals where materials and labour are delivered on time and on budget.
Constantly considering risk and producing conduct feasibility assessments during the course of a project and taking in precautions to mitigate risk.
With sustainability and environmental considerations factoring high on construction agendas, they must now stay abreast of current regulations, developing strategies to meet requirements whilst keeping the budget in check.
Managing contracts (whether JCT, NEC3, NEC4 or Design and Build to name a few) and assessing variations and claims and facilitating payments to include arbitration and dispute resolution.
Given that the economic success or failure of a building project is pivotal to the success of a construction company, and the Quantity Surveyor should not be undervalued.
